I am a qualified and experienced counsellor; holding a foundation degree in humanistic counselling and a post-graduate diploma in counselling Children and Adolescence. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I practice regular professional development and undertake regular supervision. My work is bound by the BACP Ethical Framework.

People come to counselling for many different and unique reasons. These include some of the following, and represent some of the areas I have experience working with:

I also work in educational settings with children and adolescents where I have experienced the value of working creatively with art projects, visualisations, and other creative media.

My volunteer work has allowed me the privilege of working with those who face life-changing illness at the Royal Surrey Cancer Hospital in Guildford and with children, adolescents and adults, during and after bereavement with the Bereavement Counselling Charity.

About Counselling:

There are many different approaches to counselling, which offer the client the opportunity to discover what helps them best. I work with the Humanistic approach, using an integration of therapeutic methods. The definitions below will give you more information about how I work and are based upon information from the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

Humanistic Therapy – an umbrella term for different therapies, please see further information.

This therapy encourages clients to think about their feelings and take responsibility for their thoughts and actions. The emphasis is on self-development and achieving one’s highest potential rather than on dysfunctional behaviour. It is a holistic therapy, looking at the person as a whole, and often uses 'client-centred' or 'non-directive' approaches. The client's creative instincts may be used to explore and resolve personal issues.

Within a Humanistic Approach I work with:

Existential Therapy

Existential psychotherapy is an approach that explores the inner conflict a client may experience when confronted with the ultimate concerns in life - the inevitability of death, freedom and its responsibilities, isolation and meaninglessness. Counsellors help clients make their own sense of the world so that they can live life and deal with life problems in their own way.

Gestalt Therapy

The name Gestalt is derived from the German for 'whole' or 'pattern'. Developed by Fritz Perls, it looks at the individual as a whole, and within their surroundings. Counsellors help clients to focus on the here and now and their immediate thoughts, feelings and behaviour to better understand how they relate to others and to situations. This can help them find a new, positive perspective on their problems and bring about changes in their lives.

Person-Centred Therapy

Devised by Carl Rogers, this is also known as Rogerian or client-centred counselling. It is based on the view that everyone has the capacity and desire for personal growth and change, given the right conditions. Rather than being seen as the expert and directing the therapy, the counsellor offers unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence to help the client develop and grow in their own way.

What to expect:

I offer a free 30 minutes consultation where you can talk about why you are looking for therapy and what you need from therapy. We will also ask questions of each other to decide whether working together is suitable for us both, and how we would like to proceed. We will talk about things like:

Further sessions are 50 minutes in duration and are intended to provide a safe and non-judgemental space for you to be yourself, and one in which you can start to create meaning for yourself with acceptance, congruence and compassion.
